If you have been taking your medicines for some time and your condition is stable then you may be eligible to use the NHS repeat dispensing service.
- The first step is to talk to the person who prescribes your medicines – your prescriber – and ask them if you can use electronic repeat dispensing. Your prescriber will usually be your doctor or practice nurse.
- If your prescriber thinks that you could use electronic repeat dispensing for your regular medicines, they will ask you for permission to share information with your pharmacist about your treatment. This will help the pharmacist give your prescriber information about your treatment, and give you useful advice.
- The next step is to collect the first repeat prescription from your pharmacy. You can choose any pharmacy that dispenses NHS prescriptions.
- Next time you need more medicines, go back to your pharmacy, where they will be able to supply the next electronic repeat prescription. If you don’t need all the medicines on your electronic repeat prescription, tell the pharmacy staff; they will only supply the medicines you need. Let your pharmacist know if you’re taking any other medicines, or if your medical condition has changed recently. If you have any questions about your medicines, just ask at the pharmacy; they’ll be happy to help you.
- When your pharmacy supplies your last electronic repeat prescription, they will tell you. You will then have to contact your GP practice to ask for another set of electronic repeat prescriptions. Your doctor or practice nurse may want you to make an appointment to see them before they authorise more electronic repeat prescriptions.
NHS Repeat dispensing is available at all O'Briens Pharmacy Branches.
